We took the bus from Citygate and enjoyed the scenic 40-minute ride to Tai O. The small boat tour to view the stilt houses and rare pink dolphins is a must-do. We were fortunate to see four dolphins playing and entertaining us. Embrace the slow pace of the village and take your time to venture through the little alleyways. Enjoy an authentic dim sum at the local restaurant down the market alley, followed by a French waffle a little further along the alley. Tai O is a lovely, relaxing full day April 22, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It was quite a change from the skyscapers of Hong Kong with its canals, winding streets, bridges and stilt houses with many shops, especially of fish products, but also tourist items, sauces and spices. There are a number of restaurants and we ate at Tai O Banyan Tree which had a back room with views of the canal and you could watch the small sightseeing boats that that tour them. We also visited the Kwan Tai temple but not the other two easily assessible tried to return to Hong Kong on the ferry that visited here but eventually decided it was easier to take another bus to Mui Wo and then the fast ferry from there. I was a bit sad it wasn't possible to go on the deck on the fast ferry and take February 27, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Choice of spending on busses and transits, versus $270hkd via blue taxis one way. We picked taxi since there were a few of us and turned out to be great choice. After some very windy roads we reached Tai O. Avoid visiting on Wednesdays since most shops are closed. The place is a lot cleaner than a decade ago and they really cleaned up the waterways and streets. Roads are well marked and can wander around without getting lost. Must try the street foods, like giant fish balls, Chinese donuts, charcoaled toasted egg waffles and the milk custard / tofu desserts. Nice layback environment and nice locals. just be streetwise when in crowds politely declined offers to take pics with my iPhone…maybe I am paranoid . Do go up to Fu Shan Lookout at sunset and also to heritage hotel and see those bullet holes and enjoy the ghost stories…Written January 5, 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We walked through the street market buying some local delicacies on the way and then took a boat trip 10hk $ each along the canals and onto the sea and were very lucky to see amazing pink dolphins!Written December 8, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I think if you're from Hong Kong, it's definitely worth a trip, but if you're visiting on a holiday and you have limited time, not sure it's worth the lot of the value of coming here is to contextualize how far/different Hong Kong is now compared to its roots. There are a couple of nice things to buy here, including some traditional ingredients like seafood and shrimp paste. It is also connected to several hiking suggestion would be to come in the the most common way to get here is to go to the Tung Chung MTR station, then take the giant bus that everyone is lining up June 5, 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is also the only place to see the floating houses in the city. The fresh air and lush space makes it a perfect respite from the urban crowd. Unfortunately most of the shops are tourist-oriented and do not really offer something unique or interesting. Transportation can be a hassle given the very limited ship and infrequent bus August 25, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The remote village is home to the Tanka people, a traditional fishing community who built their homes on stilts, rising up out of the mudflats and canal. We had a 2 night staycation at the beautifully restored Heritage Hotel which we loved see separate review on hotel but if you only have half a day, it is still long enough to do the following* do boat trip through the waterways and Tai O Bay $30HKD for 20 min trip* see the stilt homes from the Sun Ki Bridge best viewing spot* sample the local street food can recommend the Tai O Bakery donuts, a local specialty* stroll through the food market streets* walk out to the headland around the bay and visit the Heritage Hotel* visit temples* have a coffee at Solo, a small café/bar in a converted stilt home* walk up to Fu Shan Hill Tiger Mountain Viewing Point GETTING THERE Most sites recommend getting a 11 bus or taxi from Tung Chung exit B but we caught the Fortune ferry from here instead 45 min and about $25HKD. It was very scenic and took us past lovely coastal mountains and under the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. The only issue is that it’s not frequent so you need to plan around the timetable. When we were leaving Tai O, it was more convenient to take a blue Lantau taxi back to the Tung Chung train 30 min and about $180-$200HKD.BIG BUDDHA & TAI O An excellent although long day trip, is to get the Ngong Ping 360 cable car to Big Buddha first and then catch a taxi or bus to Tai O. It’s a full day trip, but it is manageable. Just be aware that the Buddha is currently covered in scaffolding while repair work is carried out so I’d recommend checking first to see if it has re-opened for July 17, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We took the MTR to Tung Chung then the clearly marked and organised bus to Tai O. We went on a Sunday and didn’t have to wait for a bus in either direction. The bus ride is a bit twisty, but wasn’t too long, and the terminal had decent loos. the village was easy to get around, noting locals biking through the streets pretty regularly, and despite it being a Sunday, it wasn’t very crowded. It also wasn’t nearly as smelly as we’d expected, and after a nice walk up the small hike to see the Macau bridge, we had a tasty and affordable meal at one of the restaurants. It was about $90 per dish of tasty and fresh meals, Wnglish menu and English speaking staff. After lunch we waited in the queue at the Tai O bakery for their famous donuts hot out of the vat, bought some lovely cards make by a local artist in her gallery, and walked along the river through the “outskirts” I guess you’d call it. The housing is super interesting, and each one is unique. I was both fascinated but mindful that these were people’s homes. When we got back to the bus terminal, there was a long queue but it moved very quickly, as buses were back to back, taking people back to either Tung Chung, or via the gondola. Overall, a very nice, affordable day out to see a unique part of HK. Written February 21, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Read our transparency report to learn Kong, China157,401 contributionsJan. 2021We visited Tai O recently and very much enjoyed exploring the village and experiencing its many heritage, ecological and geological attractions. Casually called Hong Kong's Venice, Tai O is famous for the stilt house community constructed above the sea canals and mud flats found here. These are really neat to see and photograph. Beyond the stilt houses, there is speciality food street market scene that is found around the backstreets of Tai O. Here you can see and potentially buy locally made prawn paste, salted fish, dried seafood and street foods such as local egg waffles, pancakes, grilled pineapple, HK style tea and other drinks amongst other foods and drinks. There are numerous temples scattered around Tai O, most notably I like the Kwan Tai Temple in the middle of the village and the beautifully situated Yeung Hau Temple north of the village. There is a former Tai O Police Station that is now a heritage hotel. You can also find the North Lantau Obelisk, a small monument northeast of the village placed by the British Navy in 1902. Many people enjoy taking the pink dolphin boat trips from Tai O. You can also enjoy the mangrove forests which now fill in the old salt pans around Tai O. There are also colourful and attractive geology in the form of sedimentary rocks along the coast just east of the Yeung Hau Temple. Plenty of small food shops and local cafes around Tai O for those looking for places to eat. There is also a pretty good British style fish & chip shop called Black Pearl at the south side of the village near the bus terminus. Note To visit Tai O, most take bus route 21 from Tung Chung or privately arranged transportation through tour operators that combine visits here with the Ngong Ping 360 cable car and village. You can also take bus 11 from the Ngong Ping Village and bus 1 from Mui Wo. Taxis from the airport, Tung Chung or Ngong Ping Village are also possible. Lasty, you can hike between Tai O and Tung Chung by way of the Tung O Ancient January 13, 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. How to Get to Tai O Tucked away in the greenery of South Lantau, transportation to Tai O is available by ferry or bus. Practically, the best way to get to Tai O is to take the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway MTR to Tung Chung Station and then the number 11 bus from Tung Chung Town Centre for a total journey of a little over an hour, if the connections fall into place. Alternatively, the ferry from the Central Ferry Pier in front of the IFC Mall connects to Mui Wo on Lantau Island, where you can catch the number 1 bus from the bus terminal to the village. While slightly slower, the ferry connection offers great panoramic views of Lantau and Hong Kong Island while you make your way to the fishing village. You can also take the MTR to Tung Chung Station Exit B. Take the Ngong Ping Cable Car to Ngong Ping Village approximately 25 minutes. Then board bus 21 to Tai O terminus approximately 20 minutes more and walk for five minutes to the rope-drawn ferry. Things to Do in Tai O Like most small fishing towns near Hong Kong, Tai O operates at a much slower pace, which offers tourists a chance to escape the neon lights and towering buildings of the city. The lifelong residents of Tai O, known as the Tanka people, keep busy fishing and tending to work around the village, and according to a 2013 article on CCN, "tourists have been flocking to Tai O to glimpse this part of Hong Kong's rapidly disappearing past." However, the few shops in town close by 5 and there's no real nightlife here, so it's not a destination if you're looking for that type of adventure in Hong Kong. Other nearby areas of interest include the newly-constructed Tai O Promenade, the Tai O Market, the Kawn Tai Temple, and the Nga Kok Church, as well as the signature stilt houses the Tankan people built along the Tai O River. You can also stay at the Tai O Heritage Hotel, a 1902-constructed police station that was converted into its current form in 2012, featuring nine colonial-style rooms and suites and a rooftop restaurant serving local cuisine. Hong Kong's Fading Past History of Tai O As of 2011, the population of Tai O was roughly 2,700 people, and according to archeological data, permanent settlements have only existed in the area for roughly three hundred years, dating back to the early 16th century. Due to its location at the mouths of the Tai O Creek and River where they meet the South China Sea, the small town of Tai O has served as the base for multiple military and smuggling operations throughout its history. A military base was constructed in the 1720s to protect shipments on the Pearl River, and reports of stolen tobacco and guns into and out of mainland China persist to this day. From the 1800s through the 1930s, British occupation changed much of the cultural landscape of this small village, including its name formerly Tanka to its current Tai O. Also, after the Chinese Civil War in the 1940s, Tai O served as a major port-of-entry for illegal immigrants fleeing the Chinese government at the time, many of which integrated seamlessly into the existing culture of the village. As time moved on and industrialization and modernization of Hong Kong continued to change towns and communities around Tai O in the last half of the 20th century, the village remained relatively unchanged. Salt was harvested, fish were caught, and new homes were built, but residents who were born there often left Tai O when they came of age. In the early 2000s, a large fire damaged a majority of the stilt houses in Tai O, leaving much of the community decimated. However, a 2013 project by the Hong Kong government that sought to revitalize this dying fishing village constructed a new promenade and began developing the town to try to breathe new life into it. There once was a manually operated drawbridge spanning the narrow creek dividing the town but that has been replaced a rope-drawn "ferry" that has operated for over 85 years. While many of the traditions of the past are still celebrated to this day, many in Tai O fear its culture will soon die out as real estate development comes in and more local college students move away to find work in other parts of the city.
